  • Dariel Vasquez

    Co-Founder of Brothers@ & CEO

Dariel Vasquez is a first-generation college graduate from Harlem, NY. Dariel graduated from Bard College (Class of 2017) with a joint degree in History and Sociology, and a concentration in Africana-Studies. Youth development and mentorship is Dariel’s passion, and he’s been designing programming and facilitating youth engagement workshops since he was 16 years old. His first year at Bard, Dariel created the Brothers At Bard (BAB) support group with the help of his peers—laying the foundation for the work the organization does today. As one of the Brothers@ co-founders, Dariel helped raise over a million dollars over the last three years to expand the organization across NY State. Growing up in public housing projects and being raised by immigrant parents, Dariel considered the possibilities a proper education could provide to be the only viable way for him to help his family out of poverty. Having witnessed his childhood friends make decisions that negatively impacted their lives because they lacked positive role models and support, Dariel’s passion is fueled by his desire to become the kind of mentor his peers never had. Dariel’s career goal is to expand on the work he’s currently doing and create a mentorship and college persistence network for young men of color from underserved communities.

  • Justin Courtlandt, TFI’21

Strategic Partnerships & Programs Implementation Specialist

Justin Courtlandt is a product of two working-class parents: a mother who came from two immigrant parents, she was a first-generation college student who raised five boys, and his father, who came from two American parents. Justin grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens, NY, where the crime rate was high, and there was only a little hope, but he chose to defy the odds and worked tirelessly to create a better future for himself. He graduated from St. John’s University (Class of 2021) with a Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security with aspirations of going into law enforcement and helping the crime rate within the neighborhood he grew up in. Youth development and mentorship was not something Justin saw himself getting involved in, but working in the community has always piqued his interest. Therefore, he has been actively involved in community leadership since 2018. In 2018, Justin participated in a week's summer intensive with Brothers@ and The Fellowship Initiative, a program he is also an Alum of (Cohort II Class of 2017), where he continued to work part-time until 2021. Since 2018, Justin held several positions within Brothers@, such as Squad Mentor (for the TFI program cohort IV), Administrative Coordinator, Executive Assistant to the CEO and Executive Director Dariel Vasquez, and most recently, Brothers@‘s Strategic Partnership & Programs Implementation Specialist.
