Closing the Opportunity Gap
@Kingston High School
Brothers@ Kingston High School (KHS) creates a rare space where young men of color in KHS (Kingston, NY) connect to to collegiate male role models, and empowers them to become confident, active, and informed stakeholders in the transformation of their future and their school.
The Work
Mentoring Sessions
Our mentoring sessions have three distinct aspects: our Grindtime Center, social-emotional workshops, and our Brothers Reading Together (BRT) literary circle.
Brothers@ Grindtime Center runs twice a week during 9th period at Kingston High School (KHS). The goal of the center is to ensure there is a space for our mentees to connect with BAB mentors, as well as to get assistance with homework, college applications, access to school supplies, and the opportunity to check-in and talk about life with their college mentors.
Brothers@ has launched a soft pilot of a literacy program called “Brothers Reading Together” (BRT). Brothers Reading Together seeks to create spaces of dialogue and discovery through text for YMOC and by supporting our YMOC understanding of self, the human condition, and literacy. By doing this, we hope to increase interest in reading outside of the classroom and to bolster emotional and intellectual engagement with culturally relevant text.
College Tour Series
Each year, Brothers@ offers at least four official college tours. These tours give our mentees a first-hand look into the realm of higher education. For many of our mentees, this is their first chance to step foot on a college campus. These tours take students into classrooms and dorms and give them the opportunity to eat lunch at one of the dining halls with their collegiate brothers.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a brief pause in school tours, we intend to resume the series later this year.
Summers At ramapo
Since the start of the pandemic, Brothers@ Kingston High School mentees had the opportunity to work directly with elementary school students—facilitating group activities and sessions in and outside the classroom—all on Ramapo's beautiful, 250-acre campus.
As a part of their summer employment, our mentors and mentees have taken college-credit bearing courses designed to teach skills necessary to working with youth in inclusive programs. This includes youth navigating learning differences, attention issues, and sensory sensitivities, as well as those on the autism spectrum.

We are so excited to congratulate Rashad Charlot on his acceptance to Bard College! He has been a Brothers@ mentee since his freshman year of high school. This is a huge milestone for Rashad and Brothers@ as he will be the first Kingston High School alum admitted to our prestigious partner college. His passion, charisma, and intellect are what many Kingston High School mentees admire!
