HOW THE BROTHERS@ ORGANIZATION PARTNERS WITH INSTITUTIONS
TO IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES FOR YOUNG MEN OF COLOR

An OSUN Digital Case Study on Brothers@Bard

In this 12-minute video produced by Columbia University & Bard College, CEO & Co-Founder Dariel Vasquez reflects on how his undergraduate journey shaped the creation of our organization’s flagship Brothers@Bard program while he was a student, and how Brothers@ implements its model—through forming partnerships with colleges and universities—to increase the retention and graduation rates of young men of color (YMOC) in both secondary and post-secondary education.

Brothers@ creates spaces where young men of color are recognized as experts of their own experience and respected as the best equipped to identify the opportunities and investments needed to advance their personal, academic and professional success. Our commitment to near-peer mentorshipyouth-ownership, investment in talent and healing-centered approach makes our work uniquely effective in answering the call of young men of color.

How we build.

Our Space Methodology

The safest spaces for young men of color (YMOC) are spaces where the possibility of being judged is non-existent—where they can learn, unlearn, heal, grow—and their individual experiences are elevated to a form of authority.  In collaboration with high schools, colleges and non-profits, we use our innovative Our Space methodology to create spaces of ownership and develop curriculum that taps into the deep, authentic knowledge that YMOC possess—ultimately creating blueprints for persistence and achievement.

Investing in Next Generation Leadership

Increasing and sustaining impact across the Black Male Achievement, Mentorship, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion sectors is dependent on our ability to create pathways for young men of color to practice, develop and step into their leadership potential.

Advocating for Shared Ownership and Full Inclusion

We change practice through shared-ownership, influence procedure through authentic leadership, and advocate for full inclusion of young men of color.

Where we work.

  • Brothers@Bard (BAB) is a leadership and college persistence support network for young men of color at Bard College. BAB focuses on engaging and improving the outcomes of men of color on Bard’s campus by recognizing, respecting them as the future leaders they are.

  • Brothers@Kingston High School (KHS) connects young men of color in KHS (Kingston, NY) to positive male role models, and empowers them to become confident, active and informed stakeholders in the transformation of their future and their school.

  • The Fellowship Initiative (TFI) helps young men of color throughout New York City acquire the skills, knowledge, experience, networks, and other resources they need to succeed academically and professionally through a three year-long mentorship program.

  • Brothers@ is spearheading an intercampus-wide national expansion to increase college graduation rates for YMOC by scaling our Ambassador Program & Institute, and launching the B@ Consortium in Higher Ed (BACHE).

  • The Ambassador Program is unique in that it is not limited to one specific campus - Brothers@ Ambassadors are spread around the country, spearheading a movement of collegiate men of color who will graduate at astronomically higher rates than previously expected.

“Working with Brothers@ means working towards something bigger than myself.”
